"Kaali" is set in a rural Malaysian plantation in 1966 where Kali, a young wife, finds herself being subjected to oppression and humiliation by her mother-in-law and others because she couldn’t have a baby. Unable to handle the suffocation and domestication after a certain point, Kali relies on her own rebellious energy and the mysterious powers of nature to rise above the ill doings to protect herself and her environment.
